The African Opportunity

The African Opportunity

The urgent need for electrification coupled with a rapid evolution of the power markets allow the private sector to profitably develop, own and operate power generation assets.

Key evolutions include:

  • Liberalization of vertically integrated government-owned utilities.
  • Implementation of legal and regulatory frameworks encouraging private sector participation.
  • Programs for the promotion and procurement of renewable energy.
The Challenge

The Challenge

There are ample sources of debt and equity available to fund power projects in the emerging markets of Asia and Africa, however those markets suffer a lack of investible projects where funds can be deployed. The lack of projects could be directly attributed to having very few companies with the experience and resources willing to take early stage project development risk.
